Varanasi is served by Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport, which is approximately 26 km from the city centre in Babatpur. The airport inaugurated a new terminal in 2010, and it was granted international airport status on October 4, 2012. Over 330,000 passengers pass through the airport each year

Varanasi Junction, commonly known as Varanasi Cantt Railway Station, is the city's largest train station; more than 3.6 lakh passengers and 240 trains pass through each day.

Situated on the banks of the holy Ganges River in Uttar Pradesh, Varanasi is one of India's most notable cultural and religious centres. Previously known as Kashi and Benares, Varanasi is famous for its countless ashrams, ghats, Hindu and Jain temples, and Buddhist Stupas. Every year, the city attracts Buddhist, Jain and Hindu pilgrims from all over the world.

Transportation in Varanasi

Taxi

Travelling around the city in a hired cab/taxi is generally convenient. Varanasi is the city of temples and ghats, so naturally you would want to visit as many of them as possible. A hired air-conditioned cab/taxi comes in handy during the summers too. There are quite a few car rental agencies in Varanasi and you would have no trouble in hiring a cab.

On Foot

The streets of Varanasi are best explored on foot. Most of the ghats and temples are quite near to each other, so taking a walk to the temples is not a bad idea. The walks are most pleasurable during winters and during the wee hours of the morning.

Boat

Varanasi is situated on the banks of Ganges. Hence, travelling from one ghat to another on a boat is easy and quite an experience. In fact, it is recommended that you should take at least one boat ride during your stay in Varanasi.

Local Transportation

For local transportation in Varanasi, the most common means that are used are cycle rickshaws, bus, auto rickshaws and river steamers.
