Periyar National Park and Sanctuary Travel Guide

The Periyar National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary is considered as the most protected area for the elephants and the tigers. One of the most renowned national parks in South India, the Periyar National Park is set high at the Western Ghat ranges. The protected area is widespread along the area of 925 sq km (357 sq mi). The rest of 350 sq km (140 sq mi) of the core zone was declared as the Periyar National Park in the year 1982.

There is a KSRTC Bus (fast passenger) from Kumili Bus Stand to Trivandrum currently departing at 08:45, it reaches Trivandrum around 15:30. From there, there is a comfortable AC bus to Attingal. Adult foreigners pay 300 rupees, and children 105 rupees, to enter the national park. The price for Indians is 25 rupees for adults and 5 rupees for children. Boat trips cost 150 rupees for everyone above 11 years of age, and 50 rupees for children.

There is a very less scope of shopping in Periyar National Park but you can purchase a number of unique artifacts, handicrafts, clothing materials, food items etc from Kerala and other nearby places.

Periyar is a protected area, and a nature reserve in the South Indian State of Kerala, set high in the mountains of the Western Ghats at the border to Tamil Nadu. It lies in the districts of Idukki and Pathanamthitta. The protected area covers an area of 777 km², out of which a 350 km² part of the core zone was made into the Periyar National Park and Tiger Reserve, sometimes dubbed the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary
