Phone, internet and post

The best place to get a sim card is when you arrive at the airport in India. You will be needing some documents such as a copy of your passport, your Indian visa and in some cases a photo of you. Other documents such as intended address in India might also be needed. You can also buy a sim card from a phone vendor or local office of any mobile vendor. Your sim card should be activated within 24 hours after your documents have been verified. If you are planning to travel in different areas of India, make sure to activate roaming, otherwise you will need to buy a new sim card in each area. Most sim card packages include calls and sms, whereas you are also paying for the sim card itself. You should choose your mobile vendor based on which locations you are planning to visit in India. The country code in India is +91.

Some of the major mobile vendors are:

  • Airtel
  • Reliance
  • Vodafone
  • Aircel

The majority of hotels and airports offer wifi free of charge or for a smaller fee. When planning your trip to India you should check beforehand if your residence will have wifi or contact with your travel guide to know more about the specific locations. If you purchase a sim card on arrival you can use it as a hotspot for your laptop or other devices.

If you need to mail a letter or package from India you can do that with the use of the India post service. You can check further information on their website for fees and weight limits, and here you can read more about sending a package internationally and the customs regulations. Make sure to check what the regulations are for your specific destination and if there are additional fees for the recipient.
